About Mother of Perpetual Help Parish

The Redemptorist Priests came to the Auckland Diocese from Australia in 1950 and set up a 'mission' community in the original Glendowie homestead on Riddell Road. It was a large two storied house and local Catholics joined the Redemptorists for Mass in what was the ballroom.

Eventually the Parish of Mother of Perpetual Help was established in 1965.

A new Church was constructed in 1972 as the house was unable to accommodate the numbers attending. The Parish Centre was added in 1991 with further extension completed in 2008.

The Redemptorists promote devotion to the icon 'Our Lady of Perpetual Succour' pictured below. Mary, the mother of Jesus presents her Son to us so that we may ponder his life, death and resurrection.

The parish is now under the care of diocesan clergy and is part of the Eastern Bays Pastoral Area.

About St Ignatius Parish

St Ignatius Parish was established in 1921 as Auckland expanded eastwards. The original church was officially opened on the 12th March 1922 by Bishop James Liston.

The present Church was designed by local architect and parishioner James Hackshaw, to replace the first wooden building. Of note is the coloured glass in the windows above the altar and foyer which were designed by  NZ artist Colin McCahon who was a friend of the architect.

The patron saint of the parish is St Ignatius of Loyola, priest and theologian and founder of the Jesuits. Ignatian spirituality invites us to contemplate God in everyday life, to deepen our relationship with Jesus and through discernment, put our faith into action.

AMDG 'Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam' serves as the motto for the Society of Jesus and encourages us to see all that we do and say as being for God's honour.

The 9am Sunday Mass especially caters to families, with up to 50 children often taking part in the Children's Liturgy.

Safeguarding at Eastern Bays Catholic

Both individually and collectively. We have a responsibility to ensure.

That every person has a value and dignity from their creation in the image and likeness of God

Pope Francis has made it clear he expects the Church, on every level, to implement whatever steps are necessary to ensure the protection of minors and vulnerable adults and to respond to their needs with fairness and mercy.

Both parishes are committed to implementing diocesan policies to the full.

What is safeguarding? Expand

The aim of the New Zealand Dioceses is to provide a consistent vision to create and foster a secure physical, emotional and spiritual culture in our faith communities, enabling everyone to enjoy the fullness of life in Jesus Christ.

Creating safe environments involves active participation and responsibility taken by all parishes.  It requires collaboration, vigilance and a proactive approach through policies, procedures and practices.

Visit the National Safeguarding website: www.safeguarding.catholic.org.nz

Catholic Diocese National Guidelines

The “National Guidelines for the Prevention of and Response to Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church in Aotearoa New Zealand” (National Safeguarding Guidelines) prescribes the commitment of the Church to have safeguarding measures in place in our organisations.  These guidelines have been approved by the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference and the Congregational Leaders Conference of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The National Office for Professional Standards

The Diocese of Auckland, with all the Dioceses in New Zealand works with the National Office for Professional Standards (NOPS) to implement the guidelines. NOPS is an agency of the Mixed Commission, a partnership between the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference (NZCBC) and Congregation Leaders Conference of Aotearoa New Zealand (CLCANZ).  It sets out the strategic direction of the Catholic Church’s safeguarding policy for children, young people and adults at risk.   It is also responsible for monitoring and auditing the compliance of Dioceses and Religious Orders and have designed Safeguarding Culture Standards to ensure best practice to create and maintain safe environments for our children, youth and vulnerable.

NOPS also responds to all complaints about abuse in the Church and manages complaints procedures.
